Handling the Swine Flu Epidemic without a Surgeon General
Have you heard? There’s this thing called “Swine Flu” going around giving Miss Piggy and Mexico a bad rep. Although many have already died and hundreds more have confirmed or suspected cases of the virus, people are in a panic (and rightfully so) over the fact that the virus has breached international borders.
With the first major health concern since Obama took presidency, one might ask, whatever happened to that vacant seat left by Dr. Sanjay Gupta? The CNN correspondent/dreamboat doctor passed on the opportunity to take the Surgeon General position because he wanted to focus on his “family and career”. Which is fine and dandy…until something like this happens. Should I wear a surgical mask? And why is the surgical mask the “go to” line of defense against viruses like these? It didn’t work against SARS, why would it work now?
So I guess for now I’ll don my surgical mask, avoid bacon (dead or alive), and watch CNN and the CDC website closely. But President Obama, can you work on filling that vacant Surgeon General position soon? If Dr. Oz’s show doesn’t work out, maybe he can do it. Seriously, I’ll take anyone at this point…except Dr. Phil.
